We are happy to announce that KTH OSUM and Atilim OSUM clubs are now partners. We encourage our members to join both OSUM clubs and enjoy making new friends.
As all of you know, the philosophy behind OSUM is to be active inside the “learn-share-make community” triangle. In this perspective, we are happy to partner with different OSUM clubs all around the world and extend our network. This will also help our members in Sweden to learn new things and make new friends.
Please join our partner network for more information.
But some of you may not be aware of some changes Sun made earlier this year. Prior to JavaOne, Sun expanded the tutorial license. It is now possible to modify or extend the tutorial’s content without special permission from Sun, so long as it is for non-commercial use. We hope this will encourage educators to use and adapt the Java Tutorials in their curriculum.
We also hope that we can collect information on tutorial translations, projects that involve tutorial usage, and so on. We hope this will serve your needs!
Today we organized an event under the Start-up day 2008. It was really nice to meet with 400 students and talk with them about open source, java, start up essentials, netbeans, solaris and other activities of KTH OSUM group. We believe with marketing of KTH OSUM club, we will soon reach 100 members. We proudly say that, we have a very good student community at KTH and they are really active and cool people. They are really high level students and also they have lots of entrepreneurial spirit.
Soon, we will start our Java learning seminars and we will organize at least 3-4 java seminars. We believe, we will be able to get at least 100 students again for this workshops and also try to help them to learn java and get certified by Sun Microsystems. Please continue to follow our blog and it will be nice to meet with all of you guys at java workshops. See you soon.

Today is the “Software Freedom Day”. It is a special day for us, because it means freedom and openness of software. Today in the morning, we met with people from Linux, Red Hat, Ubuntu communities and some more volunteers and we distributed CDs, brochures, T-shirts and tried to inform people about the free and open source software.
That was a really good and successful day for us since we have spoken with many people and celebrated the SFD 2008 in Stockholm. After having a successful event at Sergels Torg (The Centre of Stockholm), we had another event at KTH main campus. Many free and open source lovers were there as well with us and celebrated SFD 2008.
We met with each other and some students wanted us to organize more workshops about mobile programming, operating systems and java programming. Today was really a good day and we had a lot of fun. We made new friends, introduced ourselves and talked about the free and open source software and their benefits.
As we talked in the mingling session, after the presentation, we will start organizing workshops at KTH campuses. This year we will try to organize more events at main campus but we are also very interested in Kista campus. So, just keep looking at our web blog and come and join us, to learn more, to make friends, have fun and improve yourselves.
In the city, we talked with people, especially with young people, to show them that they also have another options rather than the well-known software products in the market. We also tried to educate them about Solaris Operating System and encourage them to use it. It was a lot of fun, because we even talked with some sculptures and they loved Solaris and Java.
Here is the presentation slides (You can download it if you want)
Here are the videos from event in the city center (in English and in Swedish)
Welcome back again and we hope you had a great summer and ready for the exciting events for 2008-2009 seoson.
Our first event will be at 20th of September in Lindstedtsvägen 3 (E32) in KTH main campus at 5pm.
What is Software Freedom Day (SFD) ?
Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere! The non-profit company Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
After a very successful organization, brilliant participants and perfect games Swedish Game Award finally finished. Congratulations to organizers, students and sponsors. As Sun Microsystems, we were there and in our small stand, we gave away free t-shirts, CDs/DVDs, pens and much more. Also we showed the OpenSolaris 2008.05 from live CD and people really liked it.
After a very long day, we had a lovely dinner at the top of the Kultur Huset in the heart of Stockholm city and mingled around. As far as we observed from the game developers, they are quite familiar with Sun’s products and they like using them.
We hope to see more and more projects for next years competition. See you next year !!!!

What are the OpenSolaris Community Innovation Awards?
The OpenSolaris Community Innovation Awards are intended to recognize and reward new, enabling, innovative, and high-performance uses of OpenSolaris technology, or substantial contributions to the OpenSolaris community. This program is part of a broader Community Innovation Awards Program whose goals are to “foster innovation and recognize the most interesting initiatives within open source communities worldwide.” Sun is the primary sponsor of this program and intends to contribute over $1 million across six open source communities.
We hope these awards will encourage more people to participate in the OpenSolaris community. Join a community, a project, a forum or other discussion. Use OpenSolaris. Study OpenSolaris.
The contest portion, $100,000, of the award money is open to a broad range of entries. You can enter code that will eventually be putback into OpenSolaris (such as a device driver), or you can write a program that runs on top of the OS (such as a tool or game), or your entry can be something that is not code at all. You could enter materials for an operating systems course based on OpenSolaris (lecture notes, student guide, labs). Project Ideas lists some ideas for entries. These are just suggestions to get you started thinking about what you want to do. Contest Entries lists the entries that users have already registered for this contest.
