Java™SE 7 Workshop Completed

January 24, 2009

java7_workshop2We had a great workshop by the co-operation of Senior Java Architect, Thorbiörn Fritzon from Sun Microsystems. There were about 40-45 participants and they were all very interested in the new features of Java. In the workshop we tried to find answers to the following questions:
– What is new in Java™SE 7?

– What is happening in the Java World ?

– What is next on the map of Java SE Releases ?

java7_workshop3As comparing the other workshops and presentations, the level of interest and knowledge was the top in this session. Many students asked lots of interesting questions and they were eager to learn new things. Another interesting output was that; students were much communicative and open to make new contacts. This was a great opportunity for Java programmers to meet each other and make new connections. Since community is very important, we also encourage KTH students to contribute on open souce projects and share their experiences.

java7_workshop1We will continue our Java workshops at KTH by the third one. If you want a specific topic, please send us an e-mial and we will mind it when we decide the presentation scope. Please stay tuned, we will back by another workshop of Java seminar series.

JavaFX

December 5, 2008

Today is the official launch day of JavaFX 1.0 and we, as Sun Campus ambassadors to KTH, had a short presentation about JavaFX last night at opening ceremony of “Mobile Cup” in Stockholm. Mobile Cup is the world’s largest mobile competition with lots of competitors and big sponsors.  People were talking about Adobe’s Flash and Microsoft’s Silverlight technologies to compare with JavaFX.  It was really nice to got lots of positive feedbacks from competitors and other guests after the event.

The strange thing was that it was nearly midnight (11.pm)and it was actually a night club and people were offered free beers while we were talking about the great features of JavaFX, but still lots of people were really interested in the topic. That was really nice. You can find our presentation slides below:

Start-up Day 2008, Stockholm

November 8, 2008

start_up_dayToday we organized an event under the Start-up day 2008. It was really nice to meet with 400 students and talk with them about open source, java, start up essentials, netbeans, solaris and other activities of KTH OSUM group. We believe with marketing of KTH OSUM club, we will soon reach 100 members. We proudly say that, we have a very good student community at KTH and they are really active and cool people. They are really high level students and also they have lots of entrepreneurial spirit.

start_up_day2Soon, we will start our Java learning seminars and we will organize at least 3-4 java seminars. We believe, we will be able to get at least 100 students again for this workshops and also try to help them to learn java and get certified by Sun Microsystems. Please continue to follow our blog and it will be nice to meet with all of you guys at java workshops. See you soon.

OpenSolaris Workshop Completed !

October 29, 2008

Yesterday, we had a great OpenSolaris workshop in KTH Kista campus ! Thanks to the nearly 100 students, OpenSolaris DVDs and Operating System books were gone in a couple of minutes. The workshop started with our presentation about Sun Campus Ambassador program, Free Vouchers , OSUM Group and the SAI.

Then our Solaris Product Specialist Kjell Högström was on the floor. In the first part of the workshop, he talked about the Open Storage and did it in a lecture style on the whiteboard. It was amazing to see nearly 100 people at the peak time, while there were only 74 people allowed in the room according to the regulations. At the end of the first part, we had a short break. During this break we served refreshments and cookies along with bananas to make the students ready and steady for the second part.

The second part of the workshop was a lot more fun, as Kjell started talking about D-trace and this time he had a hands-on approach. The students were really interested as they saw him in real action. Kjell didn’t even have a time to take a break as the students were asking him questions all the time.

So during the break and after the presentation, we had a lot of questions about our activities and the possibilities that we offer for the KTH students. We tried to answer them as much as possible. We also gave out t-shirts for the students who completed courses in SAI or passed certification exams.

As a conclusion, Kjell was surprised to see this many people so highly interested in OpenSolaris. So we believe that this was a huge success. Stay tuned, we’ll organize more for the KTH students.

By KTH students, for KTH students.

Software Freedom Day 2008 – Stockholm

September 20, 2008

Today is the “Software Freedom Day”. It is a special day for us, because it means freedom and openness of software. Today in the morning, we met with people from Linux, Red Hat, Ubuntu communities and some more volunteers and we distributed CDs, brochures, T-shirts and tried to inform people about the free and open source software.

That was a really good and successful day for us  since we have spoken with many people and celebrated the SFD 2008 in Stockholm. After having a successful event at Sergels Torg (The Centre of Stockholm), we had another event at KTH main campus. Many free and open source lovers were there as well with us and celebrated SFD 2008.

We met with each other and some students wanted us to organize more workshops about mobile programming, operating systems and java programming. Today was really a good day and we had a lot of fun. We made new friends, introduced ourselves and talked about the free and open source software and their benefits.

As we talked in the mingling session, after the presentation, we will start organizing workshops at KTH campuses. This year we will try to organize more events at main campus but we are also very interested in Kista campus. So, just keep looking at  our web blog and come and join us, to learn more, to make friends, have fun and improve yourselves.

In the city, we talked with people, especially with young people, to show them that they also have another options rather than the well-known software products in the market. We also tried to educate them about Solaris Operating System and encourage them to use it. It was a lot of fun, because we even talked with some sculptures and they loved Solaris and Java.

Here is the  presentation slides (You can download it if you want)

Here are the videos from event in the city center (in English and in Swedish)
